Sisu Strikes Back

Race Report: Trucks 2019.
Round 2 – Rockingham.

23 May 2019.

Darren had carried his dominance from 2018 into round one of the 2019 Trucks championship. Round two was to prove a completely different kettle of fish, with George – nowhere in round one – getting his challenge for the 2019 crown off the ground in style.

Flexible Friend

So, what had changed? He was racing the same, aging Sisu SL250 which had plodded around the Benfleet City circuit back in February. Tonight, however, he’d switched the chassis out for one of the new JS flex chassis and this, along with a new motor and chip, had given the venerable Sisu a new lease of life. If the times set in free practice were anything to go by, Darren would finally have a serious challenge on his hands.

With George starting at the back of the grid for race one, it was series leader, Darren who lead in the early stages, with Lee and Anthony following close behind. With Scott apparently struggling for pace with his borrowed Buggyra, George made short work of taking fourth and heading off in pursuit of the leaders.

Trouble

What became clear before long was that George was doing much better for fuel than his rivals and ran much deeper into the race before making his stop. He’d already got by both Anthony and Lee the old fashioned way – by overtaking them on the track – but the lead became his when Darren made his stop for fuel. Stopping so much later, George was able to take on the fuel he needed and emerge back in the lead, where he would remain until the chequered flag. Behind him, Darren was to run into trouble late on. Needing a second stop for more fuel, he would drop back behind Anthony at the end of the race.

Race One Result:
1st George (Sisu SL250) – 40 laps
2nd Anthony (Buggyra Mk002) – 38 laps
3rd Darren (Buggyra Mk002) – 38 laps
4th Lee (Sisu SL250) – 33 laps
5th Scott (Buggyra Mk08) – 31 laps
Fastest Lap: George – 8.760

Race two began with Lee barging his way past both the front-row starters, Scott and Tom on the opening lap to take the lead. His lead was to be short-lived, however. A spin on the second lap, and some sluggish marshalling, dropped him to fifth place. By the time Lee was running again, Darren had emerged in the lead and began to carve out an impressive lead with the Buggyra Mk002.

Darren Dominates

That was the end of the story as far as the race win was concerned, with Darren dominating the rest of the race. Behind him, club visitor Tom was becoming reacquainted with digital slot car racing after a lengthy break. He and Scott fought over second for much of the race, before Scott dropped back later on after making a second pit stop. Cliff took the final podium place ahead of Scott, whilst Lee endured some technical problems and, failing to register some completed laps, came home a distant fifth.

Race Two Result:
1st Darren (Buggyra Mk002) – 40 laps
2nd Tom (Sisu SL250) – 35 laps
3rd Cliff (Sisu SL250) – 31 laps
4th Scott (Buggyra Mk08) – 29 laps
5th Lee (Sisu SL250) – 27 laps))
Fastest Lap: Lee – 8.919

As the lights went out to signal the start of race three, Steve – starting from second on the grid – got the jump on pole-man Cliff to take the lead. He couldn’t live with the pace of George, and it was only a matter of time before before the rejuvenated Sisu truck swept by into the lead. As with race two, that was as far as the battle for the lead went; George was to go unchallenged for the lead for the rest of the race.

Attack

Steve then focused on consolidating his second place, but he was to come under fierce attack from Tom with the X-Box Sisu. A hugely entertaining battle between the two raged for much of the race, but all was not well with Steve’s truck. After the pit stops a fault developed which was later diagnosed as a loose guide wire. His pace ebbed away over the latter half of the race, losing touch with Tom and ultimately dropping back behind Scott to finish fourth.

Race Three Result:
1st George (Sisu SL250) – 40 laps
2nd Tom (Sisu SL250) – 35 laps
3rd Scott (Buggyra Mk08) – 35 laps
4th Steve (Buggyra Mk08) – 34 laps
5th Cliff (Sisu SL250) – 30 laps
Fastest Lap: George – 8.934

The front row pair of Steve and George were quick out of the blocks for race four, but they had Anthony – running his new Buggyra Mk002 for the first time tonight – hot on their heels. Steve lead the way initially, but George put in a few moves to take the place, before Steve fought back. Eventually, a series of spins blighted George’s race, and he dropped back.

Technical Trouble

Anthony appeared to be in with a shout for the win here too, and joined the battle at the front. A technical problem with his truck, which was to blight some of his later races first became manifest in this race. Seemingly failing to count some of his laps, Anthony – despite apparently dicing with Steve and George for the lead – actually crossed the finishing line fourth, some four laps down.

Race Four Result:
1st Steve (Buggyra Mk08) – 40 laps
2nd George (Sisu SL250) – 39 laps
3rd Tom (Sisu SL250) – 37 laps
4th Anthony (Buggyra Mk002) – 36 laps
5th Cliff  (Sisu SL250) – 34 laps
Fastest lap: Steve – 8.969

Tom started race five from pole, and he was keen to build on some solid results earlier in the evening. Unfortunately, Tom’s first lap – and that of Cliff and Scott, who started immediately behind him – was marred by a huge pile-up at the start of the in-field section. In fact, with Lee also delayed by the carnage, Steve was the only driver to emerge from the first lap unscathed and he found himself with a handy lead to build on.

Traffic

Steve was to remain at the front for the majority of the race, but his lead was to steadily decrease as Lee put in quick lap after quick lap to narrow the gap. The gap was to disappear entirely when Steve hit traffic, and Lee put in a deft move to snatch the lead. Lee continued at the front until the 35th lap when a crash handed first place back to a grateful Steve.

Race Five Result:
1st Steve (Buggyra Mk08) – 40 laps
2nd Lee (Sisu SL250) – 39 laps
3rd Cliff (Sisu SL250) – 35 laps
4th Tom (Sisu SL250) – 35 laps
5th Scott (Buggyra Mk08) – 34 laps
Fastest Lap: Lee – 8.847

Race Six saw Darren dabble with some alternative machinery. Having witnessed the success George had enjoyed with his JS chassis-fitted Sisu, he followed suit. He had no answer for Lee’s pace, however, with the Marvel truck leading practically from lights to flag. With Anthony again quick, but still experiencing technical issues, the only challenge came from Darren’s newly modified Sisu.

Quick

Lee was quick away from pole and, as with the previous race, took advantage of crashes on the opening lap to build a gap. This time, the hunter became the hunted, with Darren steadily eating into his lead throughout the race. Indeed, the yellow Continental liveried Sisu lead for a while when Lee stopped for fuel, but Lee was to get back in front when Darren stopped and was to remain there til the end of the race.

Race Six Result:
1st Lee (Sisu SL250) – 40 laps
2nd Darren (Sisu SL250) – 38 laps
3rd Anthony (Buggyra Mk002) – 36 laps
4th Tom (Sisu SL250) – 35 laps
5th Scott (Buggyra Mk08) – 34 laps
Fastest Lap: Anthony – 8.768

With another crash strewn start, race seven again saw Steve stay out of trouble and convert fifth on the grid to the race lead in the first lap. He had Darren and George both bearing down on him and, after five laps, a tap from behind from Darren pushed Steve into the barrier and out of the lead. Darren sped off and went on to build a gap back to second placed George.

Pit Lane Pickle

Darren had built up a healthy lead, but it had come at a cost – he’d used much more fuel on the way, and pitted way earlier than anyone else. This allowed George through into the lead and also brought Steve back into play. Both Steve and George pitted much later, and while George managed to rejoin in the lead, Steve was delayed behind Anthony in the pit lane. Lee, who’d had a quiet race until this point, swept by while Steve was still waiting to exit the pits, grabbing the final podium place.

Race Seven Result:
1st George (Sisu SL250) – 40 laps
2nd Darren (Buggyra Mk002) – 38 laps
3rd Lee (Sisu SL250) – 38 laps
4th Steve (Buggyra Mk08) – 37 laps
5th Anthony (Sisu SL250) – 36 lap
Fastest Lap: George – 8.596

The eighth and final race of the evening bore a striking resemblance to race seven. Once again, Steve made a good start and was leading for the first few laps. Another crash – this one of his own making – resulted in him losing the place and dropping to third. Once again, the battle at the front was between George and Darren, but this time it was the Buggyra racer who took the initiative.

Squabbling

The race became split into two battles. Steve and Anthony spent much of the race squabbling over third, holding onto the place until a lap or two after the pit stops. This fight was resolved after another crash for Steve dropped him to fourth. At the front, Darren lead the way until half distance, when George made a pass stick and held on to take his fourth win of the night.

Race Eight Result:
1st George (Sisu SL250) – 40 laps
2nd Darren (Buggyra Mk002) – 39 laps
3rd Anthony (Sisu SL250) – 38 laps
4th Steve (Buggyra Mk08) – 38 laps
5th Cliff (Sisu SL250) – 29 laps
Fastest Lap: George – 8.664
