New Order.

Race Report:
LMP/GT Endurance 2020
Round 1 (30 January 2020)
Benfleet City Circuit.

Towards the end of the 2019 LM/GT Endurance championship, two new Scalextric models made their race debuts: the Ginetta G60-LT-P1 and the Ford GT GTE. With both seemingly very quick straight out of the box, it appeared that the regular pace-setters – the Peugeot and McLaren – would have some company at the sharp end of the action in 2020. And, with newcomer Scott also fast in the final round of 2019, it appeared that the status quo was about to be shaken up.

As race one got under way in the 2020 LM/GT Endurance campaign, these predictions appeared accurate, with Scott immediately throwing down the gauntlet with his Ginetta. Lee might have started from the front of the grid, but when the lights went out, it became clear he had no chance of keeping up with the rest of the field with his Bentley Continental. As Lee seemingly went backwards, Scott surged ahead at the front, pulling out a huge lead.

Challenger

Scott’s closest challenger came in the shape of Anthony’s Ford GT, who was able to see off the other LMP car in the race – George’s Peugeot. However, it was Scott making all the headlines. Not only was his Ginetta swift, it was kind to its fuel gauge too, with Scott not needing to make his solitary stop until the 34th of the 40 laps he completed. Further back, fuel was also the story, as Darren ran out on his 32nd lap and was classified last.

George once again opted for LMP machinery in race two, and was joined this time by Anthony with his new Ginetta. It was Anthony who got away in the lead, swiftly dispatching the McLaren of pole-sitter Norman in turn one. George made good progress from the back of the grid, however, and quickly closed on the leader. By lap seven, he had caught and passed Anthony, who was complaining of a lack of pace from his Ginetta. Things were to get worse for Anthony when Lee caught as passed him in turn one on lap 16.

Unexpected

It had been a bad start for Lee, he’d crashed his Porsche heavily on the opening lap, but had fought his way through the field up to second place. Now third,  Anthony was the first of the LMP runners to pit, but after Lee and George made their stops he found himself back in second place with a narrow lead over Lee. As the race entered its final phase, pit issues for both Lee and George saw Anthony promoted to the lead, where he held on for an unexpected win.

After two relatively disappointing races for Darren in the GT category, he switched to LMP machinery in race three and got to clock some serious laps. Starting from the front row, he made no mistake at the start, sweeping by Steve’s Porsche to take the lead. Steve, meanwhile, promptly put his car into the barrier at turn one and dropped to the back of the field. Darren was quick to pull away from the rest of the pack, and soon had a handsome lead, which he would keep for the rest of the race.

Battle

Behind Darren, an intriguing battle raged between Lee and George for second place. Both took turns to run second, and George seemed to have edged ahead when it mattered most, but a late stop allowed Lee back through. Steve had spent the first stint pounding round, trying to catch Lee and George, but although he managed to pass both through the pit stops, he ultimately lacked the consistent pace to beat them on the track.

After a couple of races on marshalling duty, Scott returned to the action in race four and again opted for LMP machinery.  And, again, he was unbeatable with his Ginetta. Leaping ahead from pole, he was able to pull out a massive lead and go unchallenged for the duration of the race. Clocking an impressive 43 laps on his way to the win; this tally would go unbeaten in this round. Scott’s LMP/GT Endurance credentials were looking good in 2020!

Behind Scott, Lee and George were again involved in a tussle for second place. This time both had opted for GTs, and Lee had made the switch from his Bentley to the McLaren he won the 2019 LMP/GT Endurance championship with. While this fight was close – both George’s and Lee’s McLarens are very quick cars – the fight was settled in the closing seconds when George ran out of fuel. Behind them, Steve had a lonely race. Despite having the measure of Norman behind him, his Bentley just wasn’t nimble enough through the the twisty stuff to live with the pace of the McLarens ahead of him.

1st Scott – Ginetta G60-LT-P1 (LMP)
Laps: 43; Grid: 1; Pit stops: 2

Race five saw a close fight between the two LMP runners, Steve and Lee, both running Porsche RS Spyders. Though again, Anthony was able to mix it with the LMP runners with his very quick, but also fuel efficient Ford GT. An early crash for Steve had given Lee some breathing room at the front, and for a few laps he’d pulled away. Once back up and running Steve was able to chase and narrow the gap, eventually making the pass to take the lead by half-distance.

Racing

While Steve and Lee had been racing, Anthony had been biding his time in the Ford. Never allowing the leading pair to get too far ahead, he was able to conserve his fuel and pass both LMP runners in the first pit stops. Ultimately, Lee was able to get back in front, but the leading trio all finished on the same lap. Further back, Scott came home fourth, a lap down on the leaders, while Norman found the going somewhat tougher with his LMP car than he did with his McLaren.

The penultimate race got underway with Darren leading away from pole, but an early crash saw the Ginetta drop to the back of the field. With Anthony again experiencing an apparent lack of pace with his G60, Steve found himself leading the race, and he was to hold onto this position until the first round of pit stops. Darren had made good time in his Ginetta, coming through the field from the back, but without being too hard on his fuel. Pitting later, he was able to emerge in the lead.

Favour

By the second stops, Steve had returned the favour, and when the dust had settled and the final phase of the race had begun, he held a narrow lead with the Porsche. A coming together with Norman going into Stormtrooper corner saw Darren edge ahead. Steve caught and passed the Ginetta, but when he crashed again  on the final lap, the win was finally Darren’s.

In the final race of the round, the three Ginetta runners were pitched against each other for the first time. Darren, Anthony and Scott had each taken race wins this evening, but as race seven got under way, all three had numerous crashes before the race settled down. As the three Ginettas bounced from barrier to barrier, the two GT runners found themselves out in front.

Leading

George was leading the way with his McLaren. This was a car which had beaten LMP machinery many times in the past, so was comfortable at the front. The same could not be said for Steve’s Bentley; already a handful in the tighter turns, forgetting to clean its tyres before the race had made things even harder! As the race wore on, the running order took on a more predictable appearance, with Scott – again the class of the field – taking the win from Anthony. George held on to third, while Steve dropped to the back.
